I’m sure there are other ways of achieving the same goal, but they needed the color palletes to be paired with the banner images, and there were nuances such as which colour from the palette to use where, e.g. background, H1, body text, link colour etc. I agree, they could have just used existing resources like colourlovers.com and a graphic designer.
