Very similarly, I've begun using PowerPoint at the recommendation of a colleague. It makes you forget about the hi-fi details since it only allows you to create simple drawings.

The resulting wireframes definitely communicate the ideas better. The only down fall is that PPT doesn't handle long pages well.

No problem on the 38th Signal link (I wouldn't put it past the Signals to be doing it themselves - they're the masters of online marketing).

I'm not discounting the essence of your Boxing Gloves method, Harry, I just wonder whether sketching is the wrong technique if you're having to physically constrain what people are doing naturally. At the early conceptual stages you're talking about I just don't see what a small drawing adds. If the sketch is Post-it-sized and you're at at the beginning of the design process it seems like it's describing an intent, something that I believe might be better conveyed with words; something more like a use case. What's the purpose of this screen? What should the user be able to achieve? What's the system response? etc.

You're right that there's not much to lose by trying it so how about this: I'll give your Post-it sketches a go next time I get a chance and you try my use cases?

I'm with you on this one Harry. I agree with Nick's point that sketching is a state of mind, but there is a very real tendency to start with the best intentions and get drawn into detail.
In a similar vein to your post-it approach - very Flow ;) - I use an 'interface sketch' page size in graffle, set at 10x7cm. Forces you to stop diving into the detail.

What I like about working this way, it prevents you from trying to refine bad ideas to some level of mediocrity.

Nick, the 38th Signal blog is absolutely hilarious, thanks for linking to that!

I must admit that the "small paper / fat pen" technique isn't perfect but it's quick and you haven't much to loose by trying it. And it has proved fairly helpful in some recent training I've given.

It's horses for courses really...

An interesting answer to a common problem, Harry. I'm definitely with you on the inclusive benefits of low-fi techniques like these and the need to focus on the higher level aspects of the design at these early stages, but I have to confess to being sceptical of the effects of constraints like paper size. My experience tends to be that 'sketching' is more of an attitude than a physical thing. Do you think that a different kind of 'sketch' would have a similar effect? I wonder, do people need to draw anything at all? What would happen if you asked participants/stakeholders to just write the purpose of the screen rather than draw it? (And have I just contradicted myself?)

For an alternative to Sharpies you might like wireframing with the blood of your enemies ;)

I’m definitely with you on the inclusive benefits of low-fi techniques like these and the need to focus on the higher level aspects of the design at these early stages, but I have to confess to being sceptical of the effects of constraints like paper size. My experience tends to be that ’sketching’ is more of an attitude than a physical thing. Do you think that a different kind of ’sketch’ would have a similar effect? I wonder, do people need to draw anything at all? What would happen if you asked participants/stakeholders to just write the purpose of the screen rather than draw it? (And have I just contradicted myself?)

For an alternative to Sharpies you might like wireframing with the blood of your enemies
